It was in 1979 when, in the small town of Issaquah, Wash., Village Theatre first began producing musical theatre and classic plays. Now, with operations in both Issaquah and Everett, Village Theatre is a leading producer of musical theatre, with over 18,000 subscribers.
Their mainstage productions, under Executive Director Robb Hunt and Artistic Director Steve Tomkins, have included beloved classics such as Annie Get Your Gun, The Full Monty, Show Boat, and Jesus Christ Superstar. It’s their Village Originals programming, however, that have made them a national leader in the development and production of new musicals. They’ve launched over 125 new musicals to date, many of which have gone on to tour nationally and have been staged in New York City and beyond.
New musicals that have taken shape on Village Theatre’s stage includes Next to Normal, which won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and three Tony Awards; Million Dollar Quartet, which also won a Tony Award; and, recently, Trails, a new musical that earned a full mainstage production in Village Theatre's 2012-13 season.
With a strong young education program, serving over 63,000 young people, families and schools annually, Village Theatre is a big theater in a small town and only getting bigger.
