Fred Astaire was born.

On this day, in Omaha, Nebraska, dancer Fred Astaire (1899-1987) was born. One of the greatest stars of his age, his stage and screen career spanned a total of 76 years. He made 31 musical films and numerous recordings. He starred in ten Hollywood musicals with his dancing partner and on-screen romantic interest, Ginger Rogers (1911-1995). 

Many dancers and choreographers, including Rudolf Nureyev, Michael Jackson, Mikhail Baryshnikov, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins have said Astaire was an influence in their work.

He was born Frederick Austerlitz II.

He began dancing professionally in 1905 on vaudeville. 

Astaire was a horse racing enthusiast.

He was nominated for an Academy Award for The Towering Inferno.
