On this day, at the Ziegfeld Theatre on Broadway, the original Broadway prodution of Brigadoon premiered. Directed by Robert Lewis and choreographed by the famous Agnes de Mille, it won de Mille a Tony Award.
A Lerner and Loewe musical (they also did Camelot, Paint Your Wagon and Gigi, among others), it was about two Americans who happen upon a mysterious village in Scotland. There are love interests.
The musical was turned into a movie in 1954, starring Gene Kelly, Van Johnson and Cyd Charisse. Nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Art Direction, the movie actually lost money.
