On this day in Milan, 1926, Giacomo Puccini's opera, Turandot, premiered.
The opera was unfinished at the time of Puccini's death in 1924. It was completed by Franco Alfano in 1926. Conducted by Arturo Toscanini at Teatro alla Scala, the opera is based on the work of a 12-century Persian poet, Nizami. The opera's story is set in China and tells the tale of Prince Calaf who falls in love with the cold Princess Turandot. The opera is going to be performed by the San Francisco opera as part of their 2017-2018 season. Learn more about those coming performances, here. Turandot made its San Francisco debut soon after its world premiere, on September 19, 1927 at the Civic Auditorium (see photo above). The Seattle Opera has shown it several times. You can read about past productions of the opera, here. It is now one of the most widely shown operas in the world.
